44% of 8 year old girls want to be leaders. 8 is the peak age for girls’ leadership ambitions.

but surely this is healthy
the world needs janitors as well as politicians
Ideally i’d say we need less than that for both genders then…

First of all, there are many ways to be a leader — one of your factory workers could have a blog for his coworkers, another could coach little league, another could be the lead soprano in her church choir. Second, wanting to “be a leader” doesn’t necessarily mean literally leading someone(s). It can mean to inspire. To lead by example. People who have a healthy view of their self and their place in the world — for example someone who is a factory worker on a line but IS content because he doesn’t define himself by his job or by being “not good enough” to be the supervisor, that person is a leader to the other floor workers and even to the supervisors and the owner.

Second, maybe I am conflating the desire to be a leader with the confidence and self-esteem to lead but the point is 1) nine is too young to give up ANY ambition. And 2) women do not make up 44% of leaders as you are defining them. According to the video, women don’t hold higher than 27% of the leadership positions in any field. But women do make up 51% of the population. There is an inequity here.
