About

mag·net (māg’nĭt)
n.
An object that is surrounded by a magnetic field and that has the property, either natural or induced, of attracting iron or steel.

A person, a place, an object, or a situation that exerts attraction.

girl (gurl)
n.
A female child, from birth to full growth.

The use of girl to refer to a woman of any age is highly likely to be considered old-fashioned or to cause offence.

Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

It’s parent-teacher conference week so yesterday afternoon Aeris was with me at work. She decided to reorganize my top drawer and I must say it’s the least cluttered it’s ever been. Prior to putting on her Pepper Potts hat (should I say heels?) we did her homework which entailed her reading a book to me and then answering a worksheet of questions. Aeris doesn’t always have the attention span required for real reading comprehension but she did very well with this book. It was called “I’d Like To Be” and was some 20 pages of different careers interspersed with princesses and mermaids (which, I suppose are careers to some lucky people). The last page was blank and Aeris was asked to fill in what she would ‘like to be’ and draw a picture. She wrote “I wat to be a superhero becos I wod sav the world.”

The questions were all multiple choice along the lines of:

Why does the cowboy sleep under the stars?
(a) He likes to always wear his hat.
(b) He needs to keep the cows safe.
(c) He wants to be an astronaut.

All of these answers might be true but one is the most likely.

So we get to the question:

Which of the following can I be when I grow up?
(a) A zookeeper
(b) A mermaid
(c) A superhero

Aeris had me repeat it twice and then selected c saying “That’s what I said in the book.” I, of course, knew that wasn’t the answer she was supposed to circle. But I couldn’t argue with her choice. She’s six and she’s allowed her imaginings. And because she hesitated I knew she considered all the answers and I believe she understood what the ‘real’ answer was but chose her answer because it’s what she’d written and it’s what she wanted. But also: it’s not impossible the cowboy wants to be an astronaut and it’s not impossible Aeris can be a superhero.

See — she didn’t write I want to be a superhero so I can fly or shoot lasers or be super strong or swing through the city or read people’s minds. She didn’t say I want to be a superhero so I am rich or famous or popular or special. She said I want to be a superhero so I would save the world. That’s what a superhero is to Aeris. And as long as she believes it, I have no doubt she can be it.

I never had any personal interaction with Steve Jobs. When the iMac was first introduced — the big colorful ones — I so desperately wanted one I came up with the plan to get an Apple tattoo (the original rainbow logo) in exchange for a free one. I never emailed this suggestion to the company, which I sometimes regret, not because I didn’t get the computer (I have one in my closet and I am typing this on my MacBook) but because if I had this might be a better story. This might be a better tribute.

I have an iPod (blue), an iPod Nano (red), and an iPod Shuffle (green). I have an iMac (it’s pink), an iBook (well, white), and this MacBook (white but I’ve a green-apple cover!). I have 2 iPhones. These are not all currently functional but I still have my non-functional iPhone on my nightstand because I am going to turn it into jewelry, so I count it. I made sure to buy a case (also green-apple in color) that doesn’t cover up the Apple logo on my iPhone. The colors are important to note because the LOOK of Apple products is very much part of the appeal to me. I’ve kept every Apple logo sticker that I’ve gotten with every Apple product I’ve bought. When I took my new job last year they said I could replace my predecessor’s Mac with a brand new PC and I refused. Twice. We told my daughter she could get a PC laptop or an iPad + keyboard for her schoolwork; she chose the iPad. And the Pixar films are some of my most favourite. They’re like magic.

I didn’t know Steve Jobs. But I love Apple.

(1) I often say WALL-E is my favourite movie of all. He makes the same noise as my computer when he wakes up.

(2) This is a still from the webshow Aim High starring Jackson Rathbone. It showed up on my dash this morning in the way that makes me believe in my #chaospowers. Look at this perfect picture of Ben Danvers Parker and his Mac.

(3) Jim Henson’s existence changed my life. For one of my courses in college I created a dance in tribute to him. I used Kermit’s song “If I Were”  because “Rainbow Connection” seemed too obvious. But it’s appropriate here:

What’s so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Coz who doesn’t think Mélanie being all techie is the most adorable thing ever?

I wonder what she was looking at! She looks ten times more excited than the average computer-user, as if she just discovered something amazing …like Tumblr.
