Miriya (Milia)

• How I feel about this character

Milia was one of my first “girl who can’t feel emotions and is a total badass” character crushes. Her character and storyline are great in the original Macross, but it’s in Macross 7 where I just absolutely adore her. She’s an adult, mayor of a huge populace, mother of eight daughters, still the very best pilot around. She’s an authority figure in both civilian and military life. She has all sorts of relationship drama (that I LOVE) but she is a character completely separate from her husband and family.  I adore her.

• All the people I ship romantically with this character

15 years ago I made a Tripod webpage dedicated to Max and Milia Jenius. My husband and I always say if we had the money we’d own matching sports cars in blue and red with the license plates “Max” and “Milia”. I wrote a song about them. I ship Milia with Max and NO ONE ELSE.

But when she flirts with Basara it’s adorable and secretly epic.

• My non-romantic OTP for this character

I really like Milia’s relationship with Gamlin. She’s a fine mentor, I like how she takes him under her wing.

• My unpopular opinion about this character

Once again, I can’t think of any unpopular opinions about her. Max and Milia are better than their Macross Frontier equivalents?

• One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wish there was one shot of Max and Milia together in Dynamite 7. They don’t have to speak. I’d’ve been happy with Mylene saying something about her parents in passing. I don’t like Dynamite 7 necessarily but since it exists, I wish they had had one mention and that it indicated they were together.

• How I feel about this character

I think Minmay is far, far more interesting and complicated than people give her credit for. She’s generally dismissed as one of, if not THE, most irritating character in anime. She’s whiny, she’s indecisive to the point of being manipulative, and she is often in need of saving. But she is also talented, imaginative, compassionate, and brave. She altered the history of her universe.

Her canon relationships are awful but I like the story that she got lost in space with Misa and Hikaru and I can easily imagine an OT3.

• My unpopular opinion about this character

I like her!

• One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

I wish the stunning ending of the Do You Remember Love movie, including that perfect song, were attached to the original story.
