“What an incredible talent. Mustafina reminds me a lot of myself, although I believe she is much more talented. She doesn’t take anything for granted and is very focused on her goals. She excels under pressure and doesn’t seem fazed by anything going on around her. She wants to win and is willing to work hard to get there.” —Shannon Miller
“I know you were injured and did a miracle to overcome the obstacles to win the Gold. I believe you will rise even more in London and let the Russian flag rise with pride. I hope it happens more than once cause you deserve it my dear Alichka.” —Svetlana Khorkina
“There comes a gymnast with the name of Mustafina who is so complete, so good on all four events, and being so different.” —Nadia Comaneci
“Aliya is a completely different gymnast. She is artistic and has excellent technique.” —Viktoria Komova
“One of my favorite moments was Aliya Mustafina winning the gold medal in the event finals. She showed such style and class on the bars…she doesn’t do the same skills as everyone which was really cool.” —Nastia Liukin
“I can say that I’ve been waiting for Russia to win this gold for 12 years. I’m especially pleased that Aliya won uneven bars. This is my favorite, I think the most challenging and exciting. Aliya is a hard worker and a pleasure to watch.” —Svetlana Khorkina
“She is a fighter and enjoys competing. Some get nervous, but she enjoys this process.“—Alexander Alexandrov
Reblogged from shoesforallI love the Olympics and the pageantry and fun of the Olympics Opening Ceremonies. My family is watching together tonight (with Harry Potter themed goodies, of course) and my daughter equates “my family watching event television” with “superhero bingo”. So, I made one up for her, with boards for each of us (you can also download the PDF). I have no idea if it will work out but the point is FUN. I used superheroes who appeared in film or television plus Winter Soldier (coming soon!) and Captain Britain (because, London). If you disagree with my key, feel free to make up your own rules :)

Countdown to the Olympics!
Here is my favorite bar worker of all time, Svetlana Khorkina, and the best routine I have ever seen her do. Ignore the commentary because it is stupid but do keep in mind that Khorkina lost an all-around medal earlier in this competition after landing her vault on her knees due to an improperly set vault and then a fall on bars sealed her fate. She was doing things so advanced on bars, and so much better than everyone else, that is was a little unfair for her to be scored out of the same 10.0 as the other gymnasts.
Khorkina is my favourite gymnast of all time. I remember this year very well, I was so proud of her for this routine after all her disappointment. She was and is amazing and I hope she’s in London doing commentary for Russia just so I can catch a glimpse. (Also, I watched mute so I didn’t have to deal with stupid commentary XD)
