“People are going to tell you who you are your whole life, but you’ve just got to punch back and say, ‘No, this is who I am.’ If you want people to look at you differently, make them. If you want to change things you are going to have to go out there and change them yourself, because there are no fairy godmothers in this world.” (Emma Swan; Once Upon a Time)

There are a lot of thoughtful comments in the notes of this post. I really like this show and because I really like it the issues I have with it bother me that much more.

This is really starting to bother me about the show, especially considering how hard Regina works for her happy ending (especially with regards to her relationship with Henry) and how Emma seems to get good things literally because she asked for them (birthday wish, finding the book).

It comes down to the Show vs. Tell thing. We’re told that Regina is evil/bad/wrong/awful/horrible but shown a flawed person who is desperately trying to hold on what matters to her. We’re told that Emma is good/wholesome/awesome/right, but her choices rarely show that. (eshusplayground)

And as evilneverfeltsogood suggested, it comes down to Henry. Emma is the protagonist, the audience experiences the world of the show through her. And Henry is the one who introduces it to her, Henry is the one who knows about the “truth”, and Henry is her, and therefore the audience’s, personal connection to the story. So what Henry tells Emma/the audience is what Emma/the audience is meant to understand. And Henry tells us Regina is an Evil Queen (true) and also a bad mother (false). You may argue that being Evil inherently makes her a bad mother but I will disagree. I’ve been in love with Darth Vader since I was seven years old because he loves his son. And Regina is nothing like Vader in terms of parenting (he is a bad father, no argument). Regina has done plenty to prove Henry’s thesis that she is the Evil Queen. Regina has done nothing to prove Henry’s thesis that she is a bad mother. Henry and Emma should absolutely have a relationship. They should be friends. They should be family. But Henry does not need Emma to save him from his mother. If anything Emma should save his mother from herself. Or better yet, convince her to make the right choice for Henry. Break the curse for Henry. Emma’s the protagonist and Henry’s the guide but Regina is the tragic hero. This is her redemption story. At least, it should be.

Does it bother anyone else that everyone in town was hating on Mary Margaret for participating in an affair, but no one was punishing David?

I’m not saying I don’t want them together but for crying out loud it’s not like he’s innocent. If you’re going to take it upon yourself to come out and judge the adulterers, make it evenly spread.

It bothers me a lot. Given the conceit that everyone in the very small town is a fairy tale (moralistic) character and they all know each other and possibly don’t have the ability to react differently from the way they would in their story, I can explain the over the top judginess. However, even in that case (and I can only accept it with that conceit), the fact that we are not shown the town shunning and heckling David to the same extent we see them do it to Mary Margaret is MADDENING. And I personally don’t want them together, Mary Margaret deserves better.

Say it with gifs the #eyesex version.

vasnormandy asked: Once Upon a Time. If it's already been asked, uh. Nope. Once Upon a Time. :D

  • Favorite character - Probably Regina which is funny considering how much I didn’t like her/Lana when I first saw the pilot.
  • Character I would sleep with - The Sheriff and by Sheriff I mean both Graham and Emma and by both I mean both.
  • Character I would be good friends with - I would befriend Ashley (Cinderella) because I get her. And I can imagine getting along with both Mary Margaret and Ruby.
  • Least favorite character - Rumpelstiltskin. Though I do differentiate him from Mr. Gold who I like better.
  • Favorite episode - “The Price of Gold” is my favourite. (Note: distinct from “the best episode”)
  • Favorite season - The first :P
  • Favorite relationship - Emma and Regina followed closely by Emma and Mary Margaret
  • Least favorite relationship - Emma and Henry. The messages are problematic.
